Marci Bonham was appointed to the role of General Manager of Hilti Ireland (Hilti Fastening Systems Limited) in November 2014. She has 20 years of experience with strong global brands, building her expertise through various assignments in the US, Latin America and Europe.

Having only one woman on the assembly line or in a management team or even at the boardroom table means a woman is often recognized for her gender. If we improve the ratio to include more female influence, it is easier for her capability and talent to stand out rather than her gender.
How can we encourage women to join this industry?

The challenge lies in attracting women into the industry and retaining them as they develop their careers. Supporting women as they take their first management roles then encouraging them as they climb the ladder will ultimately have a greater impact on the industry as a whole.

What needs to change?

Our industry needs more positive role models to enhance the sector’s appeal to women. Men and women alike need to perceive what successful women in construction look like and see what we bring to the business.

Any Advice for Women in Male Dominated Industries?

Find a company that actively supports learning and development, one where you feel you can be your true self. Then let your own hard work, capabilities and talents tell your story. Find a mentor (whether male or female) and be proactive in seeking their advice and guidance. Be specific in your career goals and aspirations, and do not apologize for them. You define your own future and chart your own course, but you do not have to do it alone – have the courage to ask for support when you need it.
