The ecological alternative

This paper Kraft tape is a self-adhesive 57gsm Kraft paper tape used for sealing cartons, closing postal boxes, and securing parcels up to 20kg in e-commerce, warehouse, and retail despatch environments. It bonds on contact without water activation and tears cleanly by hand. RAJAPACK has been recognised for its commitment to responsible packaging, including a Gold rating from EcoVadis. This tape recycles with the box, no separation needed.

Self-adhesive 57gsm Kraft paper packing tape with natural rubber adhesive. Seals cartons up to 20kg, tears by hand, and recycles with the box. No water or specialist dispenser required.

Best for

  • Sealing single-wall cartons up to 20kg at e-commerce despatch benches where hand-tear speed matters and no dispenser is available. Natural rubber adhesive grips immediately on contact, without needing a dwell period.
  • Retail and gift packaging where the finished parcel is customer-facing. Brown kraft tape presents a clean, natural-looking seal against corrugated board that polypropylene tape cannot match.
  • Sealing brown paper tape for boxes going into customer-facing retail despatch, where the unboxing experience matters and a plastic tape finish would undermine it.
  • Businesses with a single-stream recycling policy. Tape and box go into the same collection without separation, removing a step at the goods-out station.
  • Storage and archiving at room temperature (14-28°C), where a shelf life of up to 9 months means buying in volume without adhesive degradation risk.

Not for

  • Cartons over 20kg. Natural rubber adhesive at 57gsm will not hold sustained load stress at heavier weights. Use reinforced paper tape for cartons over 30kg.
  • Cold environments below 10°C. Natural rubber adhesive loses initial tack below its minimum application temperature, producing seals that look set but have not fully bonded.
  • Outdoor or UV-exposed storage. This tape has no UV resistance. Adhesive and backing will degrade under direct sunlight before the rated shelf life.
  • Humid environments above 65% RH. The Kraft paper backing absorbs moisture, causing edge curl and reduced bond strength on the carton surface.

Key features

  • Natural rubber adhesive for immediate contact bond. Natural rubber achieves full initial tack faster than synthetic acrylic on porous corrugated board. The adhesive flows into the board surface on first contact, without needing a pressure dwell period. Acrylic alternatives on the same board often peel at the leading edge if the seal is not held for several seconds after application — on a busy packing bench, that delay accumulates across every carton.
  • 57gsm Kraft paper backing for hand-tear without a blade. 57gsm Kraft tears cleanly across its grain in a straight line without a cutter. Heavier backings (70gsm and above) resist hand-tearing and produce ragged diagonal splits that waste tape and slow the station. At 57gsm, this tape is light enough to tear cleanly but dense enough to bridge minor surface irregularities on recycled corrugated board.
  • 120 micron total construction for lay-flat performance on carton seams. The tape conforms and stays flat across standard double-flap carton seams without the edge lifting that thinner tapes show under overnight temperature cycling in an unheated building. Tapes below 100 micron rely entirely on adhesive contact at the edges, which is where seal failures begin.
  • Recyclable paper tape — recycles with the box, no separation needed. Kraft paper and natural rubber adhesive are both accepted in standard UK cardboard recycling streams. Your customers do not need to remove the tape before recycling. For businesses handling returns or third-party collections where box sorting is not guaranteed, this removes a manual step from the process. RAJA holds a Gold rating from EcoVadis in recognition of its responsible sourcing.
  • 76mm core for compatibility with standard desktop dispensers. 76mm core fits all standard desktop tape dispensers without adapters. If your team already uses polypropylene tape on 76mm core dispensers, this tape runs on the same equipment with no changeover cost.

How to get the best result

  1. Check the carton weight before sealing

This kraft packing tape is rated for cartons up to 20kg. It is easy to underestimate weight when packing mixed orders. A seal that holds on the bench can fail at the first palletisation stage when stack pressure adds lateral stress to the seam. If in doubt, weigh the carton before applying tape.

  2. Bring cold cartons to room temperature before taping

Minimum application temperature is 10°C. Cartons stored in unheated areas overnight can arrive at the packing bench cold on the surface even when the room temperature reads above 10°C — corrugated board is a thermal insulator. Seals applied to cold board look bonded but the adhesive has not wet-out fully into the board fibres and will peel under load.

  3. Run the heel of your hand along the full tape length within 3 seconds of laying

Natural rubber adhesive needs firm, even pressure across the entire bonded length to reach rated bond strength. The most common seal failure is applying tape and immediately moving to the next carton — the ends bond, but the middle does not. This consistently gets misdiagnosed as poor adhesive quality when the fix is simply applying firm pressure across the full run before moving on.

  4. Tear across the grain, not along it

57gsm Kraft tears cleanly when pulled sharply perpendicular to the roll direction. Pulling back along the length of the tape produces ragged longitudinal splits that leave a frayed edge on the carton and waste 20-30mm of tape per seal. Pull the free end sharply downward at a right angle to the roll axis.

  5. Store rolls horizontally in original packaging at 14-28°C, below 65% RH

Storing rolls upright causes adhesive to migrate unevenly under gravity, producing variable tack across the roll width. Shelf life under correct storage conditions is 9 months. Rolls kept near loading bay doors or in damp areas can degrade to 4-5 months effective life. Buying in volume only makes economic sense if storage conditions are maintained throughout the holding period.

Choosing the right tape for your operation

This tape is the right choice for lightweight cartons at hand-packing stations. If your loads are heavier, your environment colder, or your volumes higher, one of the options below is a more appropriate fit.

  • 57gsm self-adhesive paper kraft tape (this product): Cartons under 20kg, manual packing at room temperature (14-28°C), recyclability required, no dispenser needed.
  • Strong 70gsm paper tape: Cartons regularly reaching 20-30kg where hand-tearing speed still matters. The heavier 70gsm backing provides greater tensile resistance at seams under stack load.
  • Reinforced Kraft paper tape: Cartons above 30kg or subject to rough handling in transit. Cross weave filament reinforcement distributes stress across the seam rather than concentrating it at the adhesive layer.
  • Polypropylene tape: Where packing speed is the primary constraint and recyclability is not a requirement. Polypropylene hot melt applies faster on machine dispensers and performs down to 0°C.

Frequently asked questions

What is paper kraft tape?

Paper kraft tape is a self-adhesive packaging tape made from Kraft paper with a natural rubber adhesive that bonds on contact without water or heat activation. It seals cardboard cartons, postal boxes, and parcels in warehouse, e-commerce, and retail environments. Unlike water-activated gummed tape, it tears by hand and needs no dispenser or blade to apply.

Is self-adhesive paper tape recyclable?

Yes. This recyclable paper tape uses a Kraft paper backing and natural rubber adhesive, both accepted in standard UK cardboard recycling streams. The tape does not need to be removed from the box before recycling. If you use a specialist contracted waste service, confirm that natural rubber adhesive residue is accepted in their stream. RAJA holds a Gold rating from EcoVadis for its responsible sourcing and packaging commitments.

What is the difference between self-adhesive paper tape and gummed tape?

Self-adhesive kraft paper packing tape has a dry pressure-sensitive adhesive that bonds on contact — no water needed. Gummed tape (water-activated tape) has a starch-based adhesive that only activates when wet, forming a stronger bond by penetrating the board fibres. Kraft packing tape is faster to apply with no dispenser required. Gummed tape creates a tamper-evident seal and is the better choice for high-value or export shipments where seal integrity needs to be visible on delivery.

Why is my paper tape peeling off at the edges?

Edge peel is almost always a pressure application issue, not an adhesive problem. Natural rubber adhesive needs firm, even pressure across the full tape length within the first few seconds of application. The most common cause is applying tape and moving straight to the next carton — the ends bond, but the middle has not fully wet-out into the board surface. Run the heel of your hand firmly along the entire length immediately after laying. A secondary cause is applying the tape below 10°C, which prevents the adhesive from flowing into the corrugated surface texture.

What weight of carton can kraft tape seal?

RAJA 57gsm self-adhesive paper kraft tape is rated for cartons up to 20kg. For cartons between 20kg and 30kg, the 70gsm strong paper tape provides greater tensile resistance. For cartons above 30kg or those subject to rough transit handling, reinforced Kraft paper tape is the right choice — the cross weave filament reinforcement distributes stress across the seam rather than concentrating it at the adhesive layer.

Can paper tape be used in cold warehouses or loading bays?

The minimum application temperature for this tape is 10°C. In environments that regularly drop below this — unheated warehouses overnight, loading bays, cold stores — natural rubber adhesive does not achieve full bond strength. Seals will appear set but fail under load. For cold environments, polypropylene hot melt tape is the more appropriate choice. If you need to use paper tape in a cool space, bring cartons to room temperature before sealing.

How should I store paper tape rolls to keep the adhesive in good condition?

Store rolls horizontally in their original packaging at 14-28°C with relative humidity below 65%. Storing rolls upright causes adhesive to migrate unevenly under gravity, producing variable tack across the roll width. Shelf life under correct conditions is 9 months. Rolls stored near loading bay doors or in damp areas can degrade to 4-5 months effective life.

You might also need

  • Desktop tape dispensers compatible with 76mm core rolls, useful for higher-volume packing stations where hand-pulling reduces throughput and puts strain on wrists during long shifts.
  • Cardboard boxes and cartons in recycled or FSC-certified corrugated board. Pairing with this self-adhesive kraft paper tape means the entire outer pack is single-stream recyclable without material separation.
  • Void fill to maintain internal load distribution. Under-filled cartons shift contents in transit and concentrate impact stress at the sealed seam, which is where tape failures often start from the inside out.
